How to keep an activity journal without it becoming a chore

· By Mitja Ahlin, founder

Most activity journals die in week three. Not because people stop caring, but because the format asks for more than the moment allows. You get home from a long day outside, tired and slightly sunburnt, and the journal wants a paragraph. The screen stays blank and the habit quietly ends.

Record three things, not everything

The entries that stay useful years later are almost never the long ones. Three things is enough:

That's a ninety-second job. Anything more elaborate is a format you'll abandon.

Write it within a day

The detail that makes an entry worth having - the wrong turn, the weather, the thing that went badly and became funny - is gone within about 48 hours. After that you're writing a summary of a summary. If you can't do it the same evening, do it the next morning, and accept a shorter entry rather than a delayed one.

Include the practical note, not just the nice one

This is the part most journals miss and the part that pays off. "Should have started two hours earlier." "The hut books out in February." "Parking is impossible after nine." These are boring to write and enormously valuable the next time you do the same thing. A journal full of only lovely observations is pleasant. A journal that also holds the practical notes makes next year better.

Keep it where the plan is

A separate journal app is one more thing to remember to open. In practice, the entries that get written are the ones where the record lives next to the thing it's about - open the activity, add the note, done. That also means the practical note is sitting right there when you plan the same trip again, instead of buried in a chronological journal you'd have to search.

This is how Adventure Book handles it: the recap is attached to the activity you planned, so writing it takes a moment and finding it later takes no effort at all.

What to leave out

The measure of a good activity journal is not how complete it is. It's whether you're still adding to it in six months.

If you want a dedicated journal app instead, the best travel journal apps compares the main options honestly.
